Dry conditions were observed over most of the southern ASEAN region today except for some showers observed over the northern and central parts of Sumatra as well as parts of Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. Isolated hotspots were detected mostly in the eastern parts of Kalimantan and the southern parts of Sumatra. Moderate to dense transboundary smoke haze was observed over parts of Kalimantan and Sarawak. Moderate to dense smoke haze was also observed over the southern and central parts of Sumatra. Air quality stations located in the southern parts of Sumatra and in parts of Kalimantan and Sarawak are reporting Unhealthy to Hazardous levels. The hotspot situation over Borneo could not be fully determined due to obscuration from thick smoke haze and cloud cover. The hotspot and smoke haze situation over the rest of the region could not be fully determined due to obscuration from cloud cover. Over the northern ASEAN region, wet weather was observed. Hotspot counts remained low and no significant smoke plumes were observed.Over the next few days, dry conditions are forecast to continue over the southern parts of Sumatra, the southeastern parts of Kalimantan as well as over parts of Java, Sulawesi and the Lesser Sunda Islands. Meanwhile, showers are forecast elsewhere in the region. The hotspot and smoke haze situation may improve in areas experiencing showers, however escalated hotspot and smoke haze situation with a risk of transboundary haze occurrence may still occur in areas facing prolonged drier conditions. The prevailing winds over the southern ASEAN region are forecast to blow from the east or southeast. Meanwhile, wet weather is forecast to continue over the northern ASEAN region, and the hotspot and haze situation is expected to remain subdued. The prevailing winds over the northern ASEAN region are forecast to be variable in direction.
